He cracks open a beer and tries in vain to forget. The rent is overdue, and eviction is looming overhead, like a black cloud before the storm, blocking any warmth or life giving light. He almost hopes that it is one of his children, but he already know that isn't the case. He arrives home and sees a message on his answering machine. The cashier recoils from the smell of cheap alcohol on his breath, and it is one more nail in his dead heart.
Everyone else is getting ready for work, buying coffee, maybe a newspaper, and he can't even muster jealousy. He has a patchy beard, not by choice, simply because he no longer has the will to groom himself.
